We are fired up to finally Riot with the sports world this Saturday, February 26. Riot Inside is playing a post-game show following the Chicago Riot Pro-Indoor Soccer Team’s match versus the Missouri Comets. This is a special make-up game, and has major playoff implications for the team. The match begins at 8 pm and the show will be held immediately after the game in the Riot Lounge inside the Odeum in Villa Park, home of the Chicago Riot. This is an all ages show but minors MUST be accompanied by an adult inside the Riot Lounge.

– Riot Inside and The Chicago Riot

We will be talking about our upcoming EP, where the hell we’ve been, where the hell we’re going and why God favors us.

Amps:

1. Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier with EL34 power tubes and 5U4 rectifier tubes
2. Mesa/Boogie Mark III (1988 blue stripe built by Mike Bendinelli) with Simul-Class, graphic EQ and reverb (EL34s in outter sockets, 6L6s in inner sockets)

The Rectifier simply sounds huge for rhythm parts. I have the gain up only to 1 o’clock and I keep the rectifier setting engaged so get that squishy sag. It’s a pretty dark amp with a lot of bass so I put my modded Tube Screamer in front of it to give it a mid-boost and clean up the low-end. This is the same Tube Screamer that I used on the last EP. The Mark III is very Marshall-esque and really very bright (even after tweaking the EQ a bit). Alone, it’s a bit too ’80s Motley Crue but I bi-amp it with the dark Dual Rectifier and it sounds great. It give a lot of attack and definition to the flubby Rectifier. Overall, both amps kick ass and have TONS of features but in the end, I just set them to where they each sounded good and left them there the whole time.

 Cabs:

1. The Dual Rectifier goes through an oversized Rectifier 4×12 with Celestion Vintage 30s (I love the honky midrange of the Vintage 30s)
2. Mark III goes through a Marshall 1965A with Celestion 10″ speakers (not sure what they are but this little 4×10 is just awesome and has a ton of low-mid/bass response while sounding kind of airy without that weird 1 kHz honky midrange which you get with some small cabs; this balanced the other cab great!)

Guitar:

1. Gibson SG with a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates humbucker in the bridge (SH-PG1)
2. Maybe a Guild Bluesbird for clean parts (this is TBD)

The SG is the same one I used on the last EP but I took out the harsh sounding Gibson Dirty Fingers pickup in favor of the moderare output Pearly Gates. The Alnico magets just sound so much cooler and more classic-rock than the Ceramic magnets in the Dirty Fingers. The pickup sounds like a cross between Slash and Billy Gibbons.

Pedals:

1. Just my trusty Tube Screamer. I modded it and put in LEDs in place of the silicon diodes for a biggest volume boost. Not sure if that means anything to anyone. It just sounds good.

Mics:

1. Each amp is mic’d up with a Shure SM57 which has awesome midrange attack
2. A Sennheiser 421 goes on each amp too which helps bring out a nice round bottom end. We tried ribbon mics but they kept getting all flubby and distorted with the Mesas.

I got this idea from John Petrucci who uses this combo on his Mesas and it sounds huge.

I haven’t figured out lead or clean tones yet. Likely will run a Fender Bassman or Twin for big clean tones. For lead will likely use just one of the Mesas. Probably the Mark III cause it’s got a ton of cut.

On Sunday we recorded Backseat and Too Fast which each took four hours, 10+ takes each (we lost count) and we were really feeling burnt out. After all that, Rick our producer, pushed us to record King of Today. We nailed it in two takes. We’re still unsure if it will end up on the EP but it was certainly a moment where everything just fell into place.

Up next are guitars then vocals and harmonies. We’re still hoping for a February release so we’ll let you guys know if anything changes!

The EP is planned to be five tracks. We’ll continue to draw heavily on our hard rock/grunge influences and will be pulling in strong elements of classic rock, punk and blues. Most importantly, you’ll be hearing something that’s uniquely Riot Inside but with all the same attitude, driving rhythms, guitar solos and cutting vocals that you’ve come to love.

We’re entering preproduction now and we’ll be taking you guys along for the ride with videos, photos and blogs. Check back here often for all the latest on the greatest.

Our friend Willis Searcy directed and Daniel Martinez produced our first music video. Both Searcy and Martinez are students at the Illinois Institute of Art here in Chicago and they did a kick-ass job on the video for Wicked Games. We’re thrilled Wicked Games was chosen for the video to be based on. I bet Searcy and Martinez we’ll start getting attention from Riot fans!

Shooting the video was a blast but we gotta admit, it was a little awkward. It’s not everyday you plug in and mime your instruments. If there’s a weak link, it’s probably the band’s acting! After a few takes we started to get the feel for it and by the end I had somehow broken a string. Hopefully we’ll have an opportunity to do a live video with Willis and Searcy soon!
